The ground forces of the Army of the Czech Republic are preparing to introduce the CAESAR self-propelled howitzer of 155 mm caliber. The new artillery system is part of the long-term modernization of fire support and the transition to NATO standards

Artillery has long been one of the key capabilities of the ground forces and its importance in modern operations continues to grow. Changes in the security environment, technological development and alliance commitments place new demands on the Army of the Czech Republic in the areas of range, accuracy, mobility and the ability to cooperate with allies. The modernization of artillery is therefore one of the important steps to maintain full-fledged combat capabilities.

The planned successor to the current 152-millimeter self-propelled howitzers of the DANA type is to be the CAESAR wheeled artillery system. The DANA howitzer has formed the backbone of artillery fire support for many years and represented a modern solution in its time. However, the gradual transition to the 155-millimeter system corresponds to the current requirements for ammunition standardization and the ability to participate in alliance operations.

The CAESAR self-propelled howitzer is intended for conducting indirect fire at long distances and is designed for rapid movements and flexible deployment in maneuver combat. The basis of the system is a 155-millimeter cannon, which allows the use of modern NATO-standard artillery ammunition and provides greater range and flexibility of fire support.

The system is manufactured by KNDS France, which is one of the major European producers of artillery equipment. The CAESAR system is in service with several foreign armies and its design is based on long-term development, which is continuously modified based on operational experience and technological progress.

A specific feature of the Czech configuration is the planned involvement of the domestic defense industry. CAESAR howitzers for the Army of the Czech Republic are to be installed on the chassis of Tatra Trucks in 8×8 design. This solution is to ensure high mobility in the field and at the same time create conditions for effective logistical and service support within the ACR. The involvement of Czech industry contributes to the long-term sustainability of the system.

The introduction of new equipment into the armament is associated with an extensive process of verification and testing. These verify the technical parameters of the system, its reliability, operational safety and compatibility with national command and control systems. This process also includes integration into an automated artillery fire control system, which allows for more accurate fire planning and effective cooperation with other ground force units and allies.

The modernization of artillery equipment is also related to the preparation of the appropriate infrastructure. The construction of garages and technical facilities for new howitzers is an administratively and technically demanding process that includes project preparation, permitting procedures and construction implementation. These steps are part of the long-term development of the Ground Forces' facilities and take place in parallel with the process of introducing new equipment.

Personnel training also plays an important role in the entire process. Selected members of the Army of the Czech Republic undergo professional training focused on the operation and maintenance of the CAESAR system. The training is gradually expanded and supported by modern training equipment, including simulators and specialized classrooms.

The CAESAR self-propelled howitzer is to form one of the main pillars of fire support for the Ground Forces of the Army of the Czech Republic in the future. The transition to a modern 155-millimeter artillery system represents a long-term investment in the state's defense capability, interoperability within NATO, and the army's readiness to face current and future security challenges.
